Tell us more about yourself.
I am the first Asian American Georgia State Senator elected in 2018. Also, the first immigrant and Muslim legislator elected in the State of Georgia. I am a lifetime member of the NAACP and a national advisor to the Alliance of South Asian American Labor. Also, a member of the state Democratic party since 2010 and former member of the Democratic National Excecutive Committee. I was recognized by Atlanta Magazine in 2022, 2023, and 2024 as one of the city's most powerful leaders in government and infrastructure. What experiences have best prepared you to hold elected office?
I am running for my fourth term in office. I have multiple bills and resolutions that I've co-sponsored and have been signed into law. I'm blessed and honored to serve one of the most diverse state Senate districts in Georgia and represent people who speak 100 different languages from 100 different countries in the heart of Gwinnett County. Furthermore, throughout my life I have always been involved in youth leadership trainings, student government associations, nonprofit and volunteering work, and political organizations.
What would be your top priority upon winning office?
Always work towards improving Georgia's health care, environment, and public education.
What actions would you take to enhance government transparency and trust in government?
Try to introduce legislation that reflects the will of the people of Georgia.
Do you believe Georgia elections are secure and what additional security measures can be taken?
It has always been secure and we need to make sure that we make it easier for people to vote regardless of their ZIP code.
What is government's responsibility to ensure affordable housing?
As a member of the Senate Urban Affairs Committee I have listened to many constituents and Georgians throughout the state dealing with housing insecurity issues. It is important for people to know that there are only three major Wall Street companies that own 19,000 single housing units in metro-Atlanta. That is a serious problem for the next generation of young folks who are priced out of fulfilling their American dream of owning a home.
Do you believe public access to public records is sufficient in your jurisdiction and, if not, what steps do you support to remedy that?
In my opinion, public access is overall transparent in my jurisdiction. I am always willing to look into any concerns to see if we can make any improvements or suggestions.
