Derek Mallow was born in Savannah, GA, where he attended Jenkins High School and later earned a bachelor's degree from Asbury University and a master's from Savannah State University. Derek is a member of First Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in historic downtown Savannah.

Derek Mallow is the Executive Director/ CEO of East Savannah United, a nonprofit aiming to improve “cradle to college” education, mixed income housing and community health/wellness in several east Savannah neighborhoods. He also worked as a Field Director for the Boy Scouts of America for over 13 years. Prior to this, he was the Chief Ministry Officer/ Chief of Operations for Total Grace Baptist Church. 

Derek Mallow is the current representative for Georgia’s Senate District 2. He's been in this position since 2022. From 2020-2022, he served as a State Representative in District 163.
