Russ received a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Georgia. He lives in Cogdell with his wife and two children, and is a member of First Baptist Church Homerville.

Russ is a co-owner of Cogdell Berry Farm. He has served as the President of the Clinch County Farm Bureau Young Farmers and as the County Chairperson for Gary Black during Black's campaign for Commissioner of Agriculture.
