He attended Ogeechee Technical College and obtained a degree in Networking. Volunteers as a coach in for youth football, baseball and basketball. Lawson and his wife April have 2 kids.

Lawson worked as an IT specialist with the Effingham County Board of Education and the Sheriff's Office. He is also a certified law enforcement officer. He worked as a small business co-owner of Lawson Technology/Envision I.T. Solutions.
