Honorable Henry R. Thompson

Judge Thompson earned his undergraduate degree from Emory University and his law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. Judge Thompson is married and has four children. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Marietta and has coached youth football, baseball, and wrestling in Cobb County.

Judge Thompson worked in a criminal defense practice in Marietta and represented clients in numerous courts across the metropolitan Atlanta area. He has been a faculty member for the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia.

Judge Thompson is a Superior Court Judge in the Cobb Judicial Circuit. He was appointed to this position in 2022. He was also appointed to the Cobb County State Court bench in 2013 and was re-elected in 2014 and 2018.

As a faculty member for the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, he taught basic litigation and fundamentals of prosecution at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center.

- Georgia Superior Court Judges hear a wide range of criminal cases from petty theft and public drunkenness to murder. Some cases in front of the Georgia Superior Court involve the death penalty. 
- On the civil side, Superior Court Judges hear cases on divorce, titles to land, contract disputes, and premises liability. 
- Superior Court Judges are elected by judicial circuit. Each county surrounding Atlanta has its own judicial circuit, while rural judicial districts typically consist of multiple counties.
- Superior Court Judges are elected to four year terms. Elections are nonpartisan. The Governor can appoint Superior Court Judges when vacancies arise.
