Lyn graduated from Sentinel High School and resides in Missoula County with her husband and two children. She has served on numerous non-profit boards, research panels, and regional studies. Hellegaard is a member of the Montana Small Schools Alliance, Transit Research Bureau, Missoula Pachyderm, and Judicial Watch.

Lyn owns a small business with her husband. She previously worked as a local banker.
