Skip is originally from Durham, and now lives in Greensboro. He graduated from Durham High School, and studied business administration from North Carolina Central University. 

Skip has worked as the president of the Alston Realty Group, Inc. 

Skip Alston currently serves as a Guilford County Commissioner. He was first elected in 1992 and served until 2012 for 5 terms. He was re-elected in 2018 is serving his second continuous term and his seventh total term. He served as the board's chairman in 2002, 2008, 2012, and 2021.
