John holds a degree in political science and a master's degree in business administration from Miami University. He is married to his wife, with whom he has 1 son. He demonstrated interpretations and gave lectures on Native Americans at schools, libraries, and parks among other settings. He also served as a Red Coat volunteer and volunteer for the Boy Scouts. 

John previously worked as a management consultant for Arthur Andersen and as the treasurer and chief financial officer of Medina's A.I. Root Company. He also worked as a consultant for the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
