Tate is currently the mayor of Tarboro. He was elected in 2022 and is serving his first term. Before becoming mayor, he served on the Tarboro Town Council from 2019 to 2022. He is a member of the Libertarian Party.

Believes farming is "the most regulated industry in the United States" and opposes the current level of government regulation.

Advocates for improved internet infrastructure, saying "This has left our community with internet infrastructure that was put in in 1978, is completely unreliable and we have little say other than to pay or not pay for a service, although I would argue that it is a utility in this day and age."
