Jo-Ann Farmer is a native of Louisville, Kentucky. She is a wife, a mother of two adult sons, and a grandmother to two grandsons. She earned her nursing degree from the University of Kentucky.

Jo-Ann has a background in both nursing and forensics. Working as a Charge Nurse in Trauma/Emergency, Labor and Delivery, Coronary Care, and Intensive Care Units in Lexington, Covington, and Louisville. She has also worked as an Industrial Nurse and an "on-call" Pediatric Nurse. In addition, she has taught as a Pediatric Nursing instructor at Jefferson Community College and continues to be a guest lecturer at various local nursing programs. Prior to her election, Jo-Ann served as a Deputy Coroner for nearly 23 years, including 17 years as the Chief Deputy Coroner. She earned the "Advanced Coroner" designation in 2005 and the "Master Coroner" designation in 2011.
