Rob Crumpton: The most important quality is remembering that you are a public servant. That means you should be on time, courteous and fair. I promise that I will start court on time. I will treat everyone with respect. I will also be fair to all sides in reaching decisions.

Question: The N.C. Bar Association conducts confidential judicial performance evaluations through surveys submitted to members of the bar. What are your thoughts about these judicial performance evaluations?

Rob Crumpton: I believe that the judicial performances evaluations are a start to informing the public about judicial candidates. However, I don’t believe that the public should base their decision solely on the results. The evaluations are submitted to every attorney, but not every attorney responds. Those attorneys that do respond could be friends of a candidate or could hold a grudge against the candidate. Therefore, the results of the survey can be easily skewed. I believe that the public should look at them but then talk to others involved in the court system.

Question: What do you think are the most important qualities of a District Court judge?

Rob Crumpton: I believe that the four most important qualities are knowledge of the law, patience, experience and remembering you are a public servant. The law can change quickly. Keeping up with new legislation and case law is critical to being a good judge. I enjoy studying the law and keeping up with new case law and new legislation on a weekly basis. Remembering that the Constitution guarantees everyone a right to justice and a right to be heard is very important. If elected District Court judge, I’ll be patient and listen to both sides of every issue.

Question: What, if anything, would you like to see changed in the process of selecting judges at the District Court, Superior Court and Appellate Court levels in North Carolina? Please briefly explain why.

Rob Crumpton: I would not change the process of the way judges are selected in North Carolina. The two main ways judges are selected are by election or appointment. I believe that voting is a precious right that our Constitution grants us. I believe that elections give the people a check and balance on those who represent them. Some people believe that politics should not be part of the judicial system. However, I do not see an alternative that removes politics from the system because the appointment is made by an elected official.
