Carlyle was born and raised in Virginia. He has a degree in drafting and design from Danville Community College, a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in business administration from Averett University. He attends Zion Baptist Church.

Carlyle is a certified real estate broker. He works at Atlanta Communities, where he has been for the past 17 years. He has worked at Westinghouse Electric, AT&T Bell Labs, ABB and Small Power Transformer Equipment.

M. Carlyle Kent's campaign for city council is his first entry into politics.
