Equity

During his time on the board of education, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) increased its partnerships with non-profits and business to give more students access to wraparound services like mental health counselors, healthcare, and social workers.

Said, "none of our students in Atlanta Public Schools, or anywhere, are taking CRT \[Critical Race Theory\] classes. But here's the bigger thing with CRT: they're not really targeting critical race theory. They just want us to stop talking about race ... how are we supposed to fix things if we're not talking about root causes?"

School System Budget

Said "I have worked hard with my colleagues to stabilize a school system that had been rocked by scandal and dysfunction a little over a decade ago. We shored up APS’s finances and redirected more money than ever to school sites and classrooms."

COVID

Supports increased mental health and social support services to help students deal with the trauma of the pandemic.

Wants to help kids catch up on the learning that they missed.

Said, "we just have to make sure that everyone understands that there will be some fallout from this pandemic. What we have to do as a school system is really focus in on what we know works, addressing social, emotional, mental health needs, and then focusing in on math. And literacy. That’s the focus for the next few years."
