Karen has a bachelor's degree from Howard University, a master of science degree from Georgia State University, and a master of divinity degree from Emory University. She attends New Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Karen is currently the representative for district 94. She was first elected in 2014 and has been in office for four terms.
