Matt has a bachelor's degree from Mercer University and a law degree from the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Suzette, have three children. They attend Perimeter Church.

Matt is a lawyer. He worked in business and real estate law at law firm Andersen, Tate & Carr. He used to be legal counsel for the chair of the House Judiciary Committee in 2008.
