Estella has a bachelors degree in civil engineering technology from Savannah State University. She has a masters degree in theology from Turner Theological Seminary. She has a doctorate of ministry degree from United Theological Seminary. She is a member of the national association for the advancement of colored peoples. She is a member of the National League of Cities Women in Municipal Government.

Estella was the first African American woman Civil Engineer to be hired by the City of Savannah. She is the founder and bishop of the New African Methodist Christian Church. She used to be the chief executive officer of Golden Years transportation services. She was the chief executive officer of Y.E.S. design and construction incorporated. She owns the Famous Shabazz Seafood Restaurant.

Estella E. Shabazz is the current alderwoman for district five in Savannah City. She was elected to this position in 2011. She has served three terms. She is also the mayor pro tem. She has been the mayor pro tem for one term.
