Rick has an associate's degree in fire science, a bachelor's degree in fire science, and a master's degree in occupational safety and health technology from Columbia Southern University. He and his wife, Jennifer, have been married for almost 15 years and have two children.

Rick is an Army Veteran, serving in Panama, Honduras, and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Rick worked as a volunteer firefighter for three years before pursuing his full-time career in firefighting.
