Lauren was born in Commerce, and completed his high school education at The McCallie School in Chattanooga before attending Mercer University and later transferring to The University of Georgia. He is married, and they have raised three children. They are members of Cumming United Methodist Church.

Lauren has worked as an EMTand firefighter in Forsyth County for over 20 years. He has also been a funeral director at McDonald and Son Funeral Home since 1997.

Lauren Wylie McDonald III has served as coroner for Forsyth County for 15 years, including a current term that began in May 2016 and a previous 12-year tenure before he ran for sheriff in 2012.
