Lee grew up in Gainesville, Georgia, where he attended Gainesville High School, followed by Emory University and the Emory School of Dentistry. Hawkins is a father and grandfather. 

Lee is a dentist who opened his family-owned dental practice in Gainesville. He worked as President of the GDA and on the board for Northeast Georgia Medical Center, in addition to volunteering at the Good News Dental Clinic.

Lee Hawkins is the state representative for district 27. He was elected in 2012 and has been in office for seven terms.
