Stan was raised in Habersham County and graduated from Habersham Central High School in Cornelia. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from North Georgia College and a law degree from Woodrow Wilson College of Law. Stan is married and together they have two sons and five grandchildren. 

Prior to his legislative role, Stan practiced law privately, focusing on real estate law and litigation.

Stan Gunter was elected to the Georgia State House of Representatives in 2020. He serves as the Judiciary Committee Chairman and is a member of several other committees, including Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Appropriations, Economic Development & Tourism, Ethics, Health, and Rules Committees. Additionally, he was appointed as Deputy Whip during the 2023 Legislative Session and has previously served as District Attorney for the Enotah Judicial Circuit from 1999 to 2011.
