Sally Harrell

Sally Harrell is running for Georgia State Senator, District 40.

Sally currently resides in the Northlake/Tucker area. She earned her Master of Social Work from the University of Georgia and her Bachelor of Social Work from Georgia State University. Sally is married to her husband, Jay, and they have two children in college.

Sally was the Executive Director of the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia. She holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Social Work from Georgia State University.

Sally Harrell has been a member of the Georgia State Senate, serving on several committees including Senate Ethics, Higher Education, Natural Resources and the Environment, Special Judiciary, Urban Affairs, and State Institution and Properties. She has also served as Vice Chair of the DeKalb Delegation and Co-Chair of the bi-partisan Georgia Legislative Women’s Caucus. Previously, Harrell was elected to three terms in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1999 to 2005, where she served on the House Education, Human Relations & Aging, Children & Youth, and Appropriations Committees.

Economy

Opposes suspension of the gas tax, saying that it shifts the burden of funding roads and bridges to the general budget, putting it on all citizens instead of those who drive.

Supports further investment in programs to subsidize childcare in Georgia and make post-secondary education more accessible.

Opposes legalization of sports betting in order to collect tax revenue.

Energy & the Environment

Supports climate action; specifically Biden's Inflation Reduction Act for clean energy investments and tax credits and Georgia's role in welcoming solar and electric vehicle companies.

Believes research and development in clean energy should be rewarded.

Introduced the Reproductive Freedom Act (RFA), which would reverse Georgia’s abortion ban and eliminate many of the barriers to access such as restrictions on insurance coverage and long waiting periods.

Opposes the amendment to HB 1170 that bans puberty blockers for transgender kids

Promises to work to decriminalize marijuana and reduce existing sentences for possession of marijuana.

Education

Believes in guiding parents on age-appropriate content through resources like Common Sense Media, rather than statewide mandates, advocating for local and parental discretion in education.

Opposes school vouchers, citing over half of Georgia's budget goes to public schools and believes they can't withstand further financial depletion, despite some families desiring private school funds.

Supports incorporating universal preschool into the K-12 public schools.
