Jan was born in Warner Robins and has lived in Fulton County for 30 years. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia and a master's degree in Finance from Georgia State University. Jan and her husband, Kalin, have four children, and are members at Northpoint Community Church in Alpharetta.

Jan worked as a marketing manager for Home Box Office and owned a home-based small business.
