Thomas was born and raised in McDuffie County. He received his bachelor's degree in history from University of North Georgia and a law degree from the Cumberland Law School at Samford University.  He is currently working towards a master's degree in judicial studies from the University of Nevada, Reno. He lives in Thomson with his wife and their three children. He attends First Baptist Church in Thomson.

Britt is currently the director of Farmers State Bank, where he has been for over 10 years. He was previously general counsel for Farmers State Bank of Lincolnton, Thomson & Washington, an attorney at Hammond & Hammond, juvenile court judge in the Toombs Judicial Circuit, a county attorney and a public defender for Lincoln County, Georgia, and a special assistant attorney general for the state of Georgia.

Britt Hammond is currently a Superior Court Judge in Toombs Judicial Circuit, where he has been since 2016.

- Georgia Superior Court Judges hear a wide range of criminal cases from petty theft and public drunkenness to murder. Some cases in front of the Georgia Superior Court involve the death penalty.

- Superior Court Judges are elected to four year terms. Elections are nonpartisan. The Governor can appoint Superior Court Judges when vacancies arise.
