Kent received a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University, a law degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law, a master's degree from Wright State University, and a doctorate from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He is a veteran.

Kent previously worked as a deputy coroner and in pathology at Bell Memorial Hospital.
