Gregory lives in Fairfield, Ohio. He is married to his wife, Pam, with whom he has two children and four grandchildren.

Gregory previously served as an executive director of the Butler County Transportation Improvement District. He also worked as a Department of Development Services manager at the Butler County Engineer's Office.

Gregory Wilkens has been employed at the Butler County Engineer’s Office (BCEO) since 1973, except for a brief period from 1998 to 2000 when he served as Executive Director of the Butler County Transportation Improvement District. He has held the elected position of County Engineer since 2001.
