Maria was born and raised in Yakima, Washington. She earned her bachelor's degree in political science, economics, and environmental science from Gonzaga University.  

Maria previously worked as an outreach director and outreach and casework representative for the U.S. House of Representatives. She also worked as the board chair of OneAmerica, and deputy director for the House Democratic Campaign Committee.
