LaWana is a community organizer and public servant. She worked as the Mecklenburg County Project Coordinator at Grassroots Leadership, where she focused on ending for-profit prisons, immigration reform, and community organizing. Earlier in her career, she trained in grassroots community organizing at the Southern Empowerment Project. Mayfield also served as a community advocate with the Charlotte Community Justice Coalition. She was first elected to the Charlotte City Council in 2011 and is currently serving her second term.
