Maria was born in the Philippines and raised in Flushing, Queens. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics from New York University (NYU). She has a child. She serves as president of the Central Queens Independent Democrats, a Democratic Party club, and treasurer of Amplify Her. She is also a founding & steering committee member of Queens Blue Crew and the Queens County Committee for All (QCC4ALL). 

Maria is a clinical nutrition coordinator and registered dietitian nutritionist at NYU Langone Health.
