Alvin has a bachelor's degree and a law degree from Harvard. He has served on the boards of the New York Urban League and The Legal Aid Society, and teaches Sunday School at Abyssinian Baptist Church. He is married to Jamila Ponton and has two children. He is a native of Harlem, where he resides today.

Bragg previously served as Chief Deputy Attorney General of New York State and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Additionally, he was a Visiting Professor and Co-Director of the Racial Justice Project at New York Law School.
