Richard earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kentucky. He and his wife, Pam, have lived in Bon Air for over 25 years. They have one son, Stephen.

Richard is a licensed professional engineer. He has worked in various positions in manufacturing and processing industries, including 16 years as the plant engineer for a large manufacturing facility in Richmond.
