Prior to enering politics, Besty worked as supervisor of statewide programs at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, community relations and resource development chairperson at the University of Richmond's Women's Resource Center, and a Development Associate at the Virginia Historical Society.

Betsy is currently a delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 78th District. She was first elected in 2022 and is serving her first term. Previously, she represented the 69th District from 2010 to 2021. Before that, she served on the Richmond School Board from 2006 to 2010.
