Brittany Kinser, Educational Leader
DPI recently lowered academic standards for Wisconsin students, but Brittany Kinser has championed high standards for students and families throughout her career as an education leader. She has taught both special education and science in public schools. When she was an innovative principal at a public elementary school, then-State Superintendent Tony Evers honored her with the “Beating the Odds” award. She has held leadership positions in both local and national education organizations. Most recently, she was the co-founder of a high-impact literacy initiative addressing the reading crisis by providing direct instruction to students and strategic support to school leaders to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn to read skillfully. In the last year, Brittany co-founded 95 Wisconsin, an initiative rooted in her steadfast belief that with high-quality, evidence-based instruction, 95% of Wisconsin children can achieve reading proficiency. She wants Wisconsin to be the first state in the nation to turn this potential into reality.
Brittany’s dedication to creating transformative educational opportunities is matched by her academic credentials. She holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Columbia University Teachers College, a master’s degree in Designing Science Curriculum from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and a bachelor’s degree in Special Education from Eastern Illinois University.
In her free time, she loves biking through Wisconsin's scenic country roads, trail running, reading great books, and traveling across the U.S. to hike and visit with friends.

This series begins with Kinser’s first interview since entering the race. With a background that includes time at both public and charter schools, Kinser said the foundation of campaign is pledge to restore the state’s previous scoring scale for student testing. 
Last summer, Underly oversaw the Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) move to lower the cut scores that categorize students. Underly said the previous scale, which was aligned with the National Association of Educational Progress (NAEP), was unreasonably strict.

Two candidates officially challenge state schools Superintendent Jill Underly
The race for Wisconsin state superintendent is shaping up with three candidates, including incumbent Superintendent Jill Underly and two challengers who filed their paperwork to run Monday.
Brittany Kinser, an educational consultant and former special education teacher and elementary school principal, is the most recent candidate to enter the race. She filed her paperwork to run in December, after initially saying she wouldn’t run, and announced in a press release Monday that she turned in over 3,500 signatures to the Wisconsin Elections Commission for her candidacy. 
“This is just the start of our grassroots effort to demand the best education possible for our children,” Kinser said in a statement.

Drive transparency, predictability, and innovation at DPI.

- The state superintendent of public instruction oversees Wisconsin's public elementary and secondary education. The superintendent's office is responsible for distributing state and federal funds to schools, licensing teachers and librarians, and administering other educational services.
- They are also responsible for fostering cooperation and resource sharing among the state's schools and libraries. 
- The superintendent is elected every four years in a nonpartisan election. 
- The superintendent manages over 600 employees and a budget worth more than $15 billion. 
- They are paid an annual salary of $132,351.
