John D. Cherry is originally from Genesee County, Michigan. He earned his bachelor's degree in natural resources and environment, and master's degree in public policy from the University of Michigan. He lives with his wife and their two children in Flint.

John currently works as a State Senator in the Michigan Senate. He previously worked as a State Representative, an employee of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the vice chair of the Flint Charter Commission.

John currently serves as the State Senator for Michigan, District 27. He was first elected in 2022 and is serving his first term. In 2025, he was elected as the Assistant President Pro-Tempore of the Senate. He previously served two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.
