Jamar Dorsey, Sr. earned his doctorate degree in educational leadership from Doane University, a superintendent and principal certification from the University of Nebraska Omaha, and a master's degree in sports administration and bachelor's degree in social studies education from Grambling State University. He and his wife, Antonia, live in Omaha, Nebraska, and have five children.

Jamar is an educational consultant, the chief executive officer of Imagine Omaha, an organization of black life coaches, and the vice president of Capture DCS, which provides developmental and community services in Omaha. He previously worked as the director of community engagement and high school partnerships for the Avenue Scholars Foundation. Jamar also previously worked as a high school teacher and adjunct professor.

Jamar is currently serving his second term on the Human Rights and Relations Board in Omaha after being appointed by the mayor.
