Biography
Nikki Lucas was introduced to civic involvement at the tender age of 8 as the child of parents who were heavily involved within their community. Over time, her passion and drive progressed into active involvement with various community and elected leaders in all levels of the city, state, and federal government. The desire for the betterment of her community has never wavered, and she has become a stalwart advocate for those whose voices are never heard and often overlooked.

Assemblywoman Lucas earned her degree in Liberal Arts at the Borough of Manhattan Community College and continued her studies at Syracuse University, majoring in Policy Studies and Conflict Resolution.

As an over 30-year resident of Starrett City and an advocate for East New York residents, she has implemented numerous programs that continue to uplift and empower residents throughout Brooklyn and citywide.

Voters selected new Assembly members in Manhattan and Brooklyn Tuesday to replace vacancies left by two former members who won seats on the New York City Council in November. Nikki Lucas, a former City Council candidate and community advocate, won the special election to represent Brooklyn’s 60th District, a seat previously held by Council member Charles Barron. In the 72nd Assembly District in Washington Heights, Manny De Los Santos was elected to replace Carmen De La Rosa, who also left when he was elected to the City Council. Both will have to run again in the June primary to hold on to their seats.

2026 New York General Election

East New York - Brooklyn, NY – Yesterday Assemblywoman Nikki Lucas voted yes on the first reparations-based bill to be passed by the New York State Assembly. The bill allows for the creation of the New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies, to study the lingering, negative effects of slavery on descendants of those who were enslaved in America.

Assemblywoman Lucas made it clear on the Assembly floor that she was originally disappointed in the way the bill was written because it does not include the study of reparations based on lineage. However, after she pointed that fact out in an impassioned speech, Chairwoman Michaelle C. Solages said on record that the study will in fact include lineage-based reparations.

Lucas added, “I feel strongly about ensuring that those people who were actually enslaved in America were repaired. But I am happy that the sponsor of this bill has recognized today on record that lineage based has to be a focus of this study.”

How would you address ongoing concerns about public safety in New York City?

I would support a policy that provides mutli-family homeowners with tax breaks in exchange for guaranteeing that their apartments will remain at an affordable level, based on the specific neighborhood, not based on the income of all New Yorkers. Additionally, I would support keeping NYCHA out of the hands of private developers. NYCHA is the only true affordable housing portfolio that is owned by NYC.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

Besides affordable housing, I am addressing equity in health care, equity in education, public safety, homeownership and the eradication of homelessness. No student should be homeless in my district, or in any other district throughout this city. Over the past 20 years our district has grown to be the homeless district of New York City. This cannot continue!
