2026 New York General Election

For the fourteenth consecutive session, on behalf of local transportation leaders, municipalities, and taxpayers from throughout our respective legislative districts and across New York State, we welcome this opportunity to address the need for greater state investment in local roads, bridges, and culverts. Therefore, to reiterate, we put forth the following request to add $250 million in CHIPS base aid to the Executive Budget proposal, to a total of $898.1 million. We also support having five of the state’s local road assistance programs be combined into two, to reduce the administrative burden on recordkeeping at NYSDOT and municipalities.

final-chips-letter-2.12.26.pdf

Additionally, we strongly support increasing the CHIPS bidding threshold from $350,000 to $1,000,000 or eliminating the threshold altogether. We are disappointed that a proposal to modify the threshold was not included in the Executive Budget as it was in some previous years and urge that this initiative be added to the final budget. Increasing the CHIPS bidding threshold will give municipalities more flexibility to pursue the most cost-effective option to bid out or perform in-house projects less than $1,000,000, reducing costs to taxpayers.

Inspired by his mother’s example, he stepped up to serve, first on his local town board, then as Town Supervisor, County Representative, and now as a New York State Senator. In every role, he has focused on delivering results, keeping taxes low, and standing up for the people he represents. He has never created a budget that raised taxes.

“We had a piece of legislation that I was very proud to move forward. And it was making EMS an essential service. Most people don’t know that it’s not an essential service. Everybody told me, ‘Can’t be done.’ ‘Don’t even do it.’ ‘Don’t even try.’ And we did it,” Oberacker said.

Additionally, we state again that it is important that we understand the impact our legislation can have on local road infrastructure. Starting in 2027 the state is mandating that all new school bus purchases be electric. Our 1,600 municipalities have a responsibility to guarantee that the local road system can handle the significantly heavier weight of electric school buses.

ONEONTA, 07/22/22 -- State Senator Peter Oberacker (R/C – Schenevus) today commented on the attack on Congressman Lee Zeldin and the fatal police shooting in Rochester:
“A sitting congressman, and candidate for governor, is publicly attacked in front of scores of witnesses and the violent offender is immediately released on his own recognizance. While miles away, two police are shot, one fatally, and another individual wounded. This is more clear-cut evidence that New York State’s criminal element is running unchecked thanks to one-party rule in Albany. It is time to end the failed bail reform experiment - to allow judges to act appropriately, help protect police on the streets, and keep the public safe.”
Senator Oberacker sponsors legislation (S.6106 ) to repeal the so-called bail reform law. He is co-sponsor of several other bills (S.1521 , S.1523 , S.6947 , S.7300 ) to increase judicial discretion when setting bail in regard to serious offenses.
