A motion was then made to close East Arcadia effective June 30, 2026. It passed 6-3 with Mackie Singletary, Tim Benton, Chris Clark, Aaron Russ, Dennis Edwards and Steve Kwiatkowski voting in favor.

Board votes to close East Arcadia School on June 30, 2026

The school serves Kindergarten through 5th grade and currently has an enrollment of 58 students.

According to the East Arcadia School Closure and Consolidation Study, facility conditions, geographic concerns, resource limitations, and academic performance concerns have been cited for closing the school, including:

* All classroom buildings are designated as being in “poor condition” by NCDPI
* A total of $1.975 million in critical needs
* Consistently low-performing
* Staffing challenges
* Geographically isolated from much of Bladen County
The study also highlights various benefits of consolidation, such as better resource allocation, more student support and programs, and reduced or eliminated combination classes.

Board members Tim Benton, Chris Clark, Dennis Edwards, Aaron Russ and Mackie Singletary voted for the closure, and Harfel Davis, Gary Rhoda, Anthony Thomas and Steve Kwiatkowski voted against the closure.
