Alan is a graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University (BA in Religion, 2002), Wake Forest University Divinity School (MDiv) and Vanderbilt University (MA). He is married to Jenny Sherouse, and they are the parents of Jack, Della, Warner and Bea.

I am a faith leader and community leader in Guilford County, where I live with my spouse, Jenny Sherouse, and our four children (GCS students in grades 1, 2, 5 & 7). Throughout nine years in Guilford County, I have been active in justice work, community organizing and education advocacy efforts.

Alan Sherouse. Senior Pastor. Alan has been our Senior Pastor since September 2013. Before coming to First Baptist Greensboro, he served as Pastor of Metro Baptist Church in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan — his first pastorate, where many of his convictions about church, community ministry, social justice and advocacy were formed.

Sherouse also says the district needs to practice restorative justice in discipline. “We also need to remember the system that this gap that exists in education exists in health care and economics and so many other fields,” Sherouse said. “And we have to name racism. We have to name that it exists that it doesn't look like segregated lunch counters, but it still exists, and we have to name the injustice to work against it.”

Access to Education

Valuing teachers. Our GCS professional educators should be trusted, empowered and supported to ensure their longevity and thriving in our system, as well as the continued growth of our students. I will advocate for teachers at every turn, particularly working to promote public trust in a time of intensifying political strategies that undermine our educators and ultimately erode public trust in our schools. Part of this includes promoting continued partnership between teachers and parents. GCS has long demonstrated an ability to build effective partnership between educators, students and parents/caregivers, and I will continue to encourage these healthy relationships.

Sherouse named teachers and parents as some of the district's greatest strengths. “One of them is our educators, whom we should treat with trust and support and fairness, who should be offered opportunities for meaningful advancement, who should be invited to the tables where decisions are made, and who should be supported with full funding befitting their work,” he said. “Second, is the parents and the trusted adults and caregivers in the lives of our students who already are able to partner in so many meaningful ways with our Guilford County educators.”

Teachers

In response to the teaching of critical race theory, Sherouse said that he supports the teaching of all history, particularly the most difficult. “There is, I think a reflex, to push away the hard parts of our history, and we don’t have to do that,” Sherouse said. “We can learn from it so we will never repeat it and furthermore, we can absolutely trust our outstanding educators to do this with our children.”

When asked about book bannings, Sherouse said he supports increasing access to “developmentally-appropriate” books, stating that “our students themselves can make decisions about their elective reading.”
