I’m Terry English and I am seeking a seat on the McDowell County Board of Commissioners.

I was born in the northernmost section of the county in the little community of Ashford. I have lived here all my life. I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Susan for 48 years. Together, we have had a full and joyous life that includes three daughters, three sons-in-law, and five wonderful grandchildren.

I was born in the northernmost section of the county in the little community of Ashford. I have lived here all my life. I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Susan for 48 years. Together, we have had a full and joyous life that includes three daughters, three sons-in-law, and five wonderful grandchildren.

In addition, I was also elected to the North Cove district seat on the McDowell County Board of Education, a position I proudly held for 28 years. The English family have been generational members of Concord United Methodist Church where I have held several lay administrative positions through the years.

Terry English is from Ashford in the northernmost section of McDowell County. He has been married to Susan for 48 years and has three daughters and five grandchildren. He has held several non-clergy administrative positions at Concord United Methodist Church.

Whether it was drought, two major hurricanes which resulted in catastrophic floods, sickness, depressions, world wars etc. the English family has endured much over the decades and successfully managed to operate a dairy farm for 90 plus years. I currently operate a beef cattle and hay operation after a 40-year career as a dairy farmer. Farming has taught me what perseverance, faith, hard work and love of community truly means.

Terry currently operates a beef cattle and hay operation. He previously worked as a dairy farmer.

I began to carry on this legacy by serving 30 years on the Board of Supervisors for the McDowell Soil and Water Conservation District. In addition, I was also elected to the North Cove district seat on the McDowell County Board of Education, a position I proudly held for 28 years. The English family have been generational members of Concord United Methodist Church where I have held several lay administrative positions through the years.

In McDowell County, two County Commission seats were up for election. Republican incumbent Patrick Ellis won re-election and Republican Trisha Garner won the second seat, defeating Democrat Teri Stahara.

In the County Board of Education race, Republican challenger Jimmy Allison ousted the current chairman, Democrat Terry English, for the North Cove District seat. Republican Derrick McGinnis won the Old Fort District seat, defeating unaffiliated incumbent Beth Lolley Silver.

Terry previously served in the North Cove district seat on the McDowell County Board of Education for 28 years. He ran for reelection to the seat in 2024 but did not win.

Chairman Brown declared the meeting into a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. pursuant to North Carolina General Statute 159-12.
Terry English, Chairman of McDowell County Board of Education, addressed the Board regarding McDowell County Schools funding. Mr. English requested the Commissioners to reevaluate the presented budget and allow their best efforts for the school system.
Vice-Chairman Walker made a motion to go out of the public hearing at 5:36 p.m.
