My name is LaHoma and I am running to be your District 6 representative on the Granville County Board of Commissioners. Although I have never run for office before, I have always served my community and my country.

I was born in Durham, N.C. My husband and I moved to Granville county in 1991 and we raised our two children here. I have loved living out in the country, just outside the Creedmoor city limit.

I am an Associate Professor at North Carolina Central University and I have an Adjunct Associate Professor faculty appointment at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. I work with those students who are interested in pursuing careers in the Health professions. I also have an active cancer prevention research portfolio.

Some things have improved since 2014 when the media put a spotlight on our EMS issues but there are still concerns about EMS on the southern end. How do we help residents feel confident about using those services? We also need to improve and increase more outlets for residents to work, spend their leisure and recreational time as well as their shopping dollars closer to home. High speed internet throughout the county would allow more people to work from home.

Parents are already voting with their feet by finding alternative schooling arrangements, teachers and their families will not stay more than a few years, children will not come back to live once they’re grown, employers will not hire our residents and they most certainly will not invest their long term dollars here. We need to address student performance, teacher retention, building restoration and inspire families to have confidence in the local schools so they will stay and build their futures here.

One of the hardest things I have ever done was to go back to school to finish my PhD with two small children, but I was blessed with a very supportive husband and family who got me through those long 5 years.

LaHoma Smith Romocki is originally from Durham, North Carolina. She earned a Ph.D. She moved to Granville County with her husband in 1991, raised two children there, and lives outside Creedmoor.

My husband and I joined the United States Peace Corps where we worked many years teaching farmers new agricultural techniques and public health workers to practice health education. More recently, I served at the Country Director for the U.S. government's 3rd largest Peace Corps program in sub-Saharan Africa.

These days I can be found back in the classroom, and giving lectures across the country.
