In early 2013 longtime police chief and Fire Chief John T. Evans retired after 30+ years in law enforcement, because of his retirement Captain Kimothy Monroe took over operations of LPD as interim chief until the Laurinburg City Council could make a final appointment. In August of 2013 Laurinburg native, 20+ years law enforcement veteran, and school board member Darwin “Duke” Williams was selected as the new Laurinburg Police Department Chief of Police.

Laurinburg, N.C. (WPDE) — Laurinburg Police Chief Darwin "Duke" Williams announced that he's retiring on June 1 after 30 years in law enforcement. Williams is well-loved and respected in the community.

Williams said he worked his way up through the ranks to become a sergeant, lieutenant and eventually chief. He added he's served the community with "passion and dedication."
