“We make sure we're focusing on the individuals that are causing real harm to the community,” Waller told WRAL. “We're focusing on those individuals so that they don't fall through the proverbial judicial cracks and be part of the revolving door.”

“I've seen cases where somebody may be charged with a car break in in one jurisdiction, and a home invasion in another jurisdiction. Sometimes, the two agencies aren't talking to each other. What we're doing is just trying to improve that communication,” Waller explained.

“You need to make sure the public is safe. I think that's probably a pretty obvious answer,” Waller said. “But then also, efficiency is very, very important to me, making sure cases are moving through the system…Then, obviously, relationships are very important to me. You can't have the other two working smoothly without having relationships in the courthouse and in the community and with law enforcement.”

“People don't understand the time that it takes to transfer a juvenile from juvenile court to adult court, and that is a very sensitive, sensitive process,” Waller said. “What I want to make sure is that we're putting a focus on violent juvenile crimes, and that doesn't mean just making sure that we're putting young individuals in prison for as long as we can.”

Waller added, “I want to thank District Attorney Susan Doyle for her mentorship and confidence in me. She has been a powerful example of principled leadership, and I look forward to continuing the office’s strong tradition of service, victim advocacy and collaboration with law enforcement and the judiciary.
