Matt Scott is from Pembroke, North Carolina. He has a bachelor 27s degree from North Carolina State University, a law degree from the University of Wisconsin, and a master 27s degree in strategic studies from the United States Army War College. He is married to his wife, Jessica, and they have two children together.

Before joining the district attorney's office, he served as a judge advocate and paratrooper in the United States Army for eight and a half years.
