- District Court judges hear civil, criminal, and juvenile cases. Civil cases dealing with divorce, child custody, and child support are heard in District Court. 
- Under the District Court, the magistrate can try small claims cases ($10,000 or less), landlord eviction cases, and suits for recovery of personal property. A magistrate is an independent judicial officer, recognized by the North Carolina Constitution as an officer of the district court.

Matt is a judge of the North Carolina District Court for District 26, Seat 16. He has served in that role since January 1, 2023. He previously worked as a contract attorney assisting in multi-million-dollar lawsuits and then founded and led his own law firm, Newton & Arroyo, PLLC, where he practiced as a trial attorney in state and federal court for about fifteen years.

Matt Newton is currently a judge of the North Carolina District Court District 26 Seat 16. He was elected in the general election on November 8, 2022, and assumed office on January 1, 2023, beginning his first term. Previously, Newton served on the Charlotte City Council representing District 5; he was first elected in 2017 and re-elected in the general election on November 5, 2019. Newton also ran in the May 8, 2012 Democratic primary for the U.S. House to represent North Carolina’s 12th District but was defeated by incumbent Rep. Melvin L. Watt.
