Gary Weart earned his bachelor's degree in social studies and biology from Pfeiffer College, a master's degree in educational administration and supervision from Johns Hopkins University, and an educational specialties degree from Johns Hopkins University.

Gary is a retired public school teacher. He has also worked as a coach of seven sports, administrator, violence-prevention specialist, teacher-support specialist, and adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He founded Students Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E), a program supporting school safety and violence prevention. Gary served in the U.S. Army for three years.
