Gene Douglass is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has a bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics from the King's College, a master's degree in polymer science from the University of Connecticut, a master's degree in theology from Bethel Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in fiber and polymer science from North Carolina State University. Gene is a widower.

Gene currently works as a polymer chemistry consultant. He previously worked as a professor at Presbyterian College, the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley, the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, JSC Nazarbayev University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, the College of Micronesia FSM, St. Petersburg College, Hillsborough Community College, Pasco-Hernando Community College, St. Leo College, a teacher at Merrimack High School and St. Francis School, and a chemist at Increte Systems, Inc. and Tate & Lyle.

Gene previously ran for U.S. representative for North Carolina's 2nd District in 2024, U.S. representative for New Hampshire's 2nd District in 2002, and U.S. Senator for Hawaii in 2000 and 1998, but did not win.
