Richard Hudson grew up in Charlotte. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He lives in Southern Pines with his wife, Renee, and their son.

Tracing his roots back seven generations in the Sandhills, Richard learned about hard work from his father, working construction jobs from an early age and waiting tables to help put himself through college. He learned about public service from his mother, a retired North Carolina public school teacher. Throughout his professional career, Richard has drawn upon these values and lessons to get results for the people he serves.

Richard Hudson has represented North Carolina in Congress since 2013. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Richard is recognized as a conservative leader, focused on common-sense solutions to support our economy, veterans, and families. He also serves as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), placing him as the fifth-ranking Member in leadership and one of the highest-ranking Congressmen from North Carolina in history.

Richard is committed to securing our border and protecting our community from dangers posed by threats like the opioid crisis and crime. To achieve this goal, Richard believes we must support good police officers and law enforcement who serve our communities, finish securing our border with wall and technology, reinstate border policies that have worked like ‘Remain in Mexico,’ and build on our efforts to end the opioid epidemic. Richard will continue to work on bipartisan solutions to address each of these issues and keep our community and country safe.

A lifelong hunter, sportsman and national leader on Second Amendment issues in Congress, Richard knows the Second Amendment is America’s First Freedom. Richard vigorously defends the rights of all law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms and was honored to previously be the only Congressman invited to address the NRA with President Donald Trump.

Richard has successfully defended against efforts to ban green tip ammunition, overreaching gun control bills, and led the U.S. House to pass what was called “the biggest guns rights boost since the ratification of the Second Amendment” – his Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. Richard continues to fight to expand concealed carry reciprocity and ensure law-abiding concealed carry permit holders do not become criminals when crossing an invisible state line.

“If you’re learning English and you can’t see the lips of your teacher, it hurts your ability to learn English. It also has harmed the emotional development of our kids because they can’t see each other, so I think the science tells us that the damage done by masks in schools is much worse than [the risks of not wearing them],” Hudson said in an interview. “[COVID-19] is not as harmful to kids, so if that changed, if a future variant was very deadly for children then I would want to follow the science and maybe we’d change something we were doing but right now the science tells us the kids don’t need that mask. My position is let the parents decide: if they want their kids wearing a mask that’s their decision.”

“Most of the price of gas in America is driven by the futures market,” he said. “So, investors make predictions based on what they think the future looks like. There are two markets, the U.S. market and the global market. The U.S. market investors see Joe Biden cancel the (Keystone) XL Pipeline on Day 1, they see him restrict exploration on federal land — they see all these moves and they say, ‘Oh, prices are going to go up,’ so they make predictions based on that. By doing that, they make price go up. If Joe Biden would reverse them — even the XL Pipeline, I think it would have an impact on the futures markets and we’d see prices go down right away. Even before the oil got to the market.”

Richard is also a founding member of the Conservative Climate Caucus, working to champion free-market ideas to reduce emissions. Asked about the planned $63 million investment in Richmond County to build a new solar farm, Hudson said he supports “all of the above” in terms of energy, but believes that markets should be allowed to determine what is best. While solar is a positive development and creates jobs, Hudson said the issue is consistent storage of the energy produced, which isn’t as much of an issue with natural gas and nuclear energy. “I think adding solar is good but my approach has been: let’s push technology, let’s push innovation, because once we figure out that storage problem wind and solar are going to be much better,” Hudson said.

All last year, a bunch of us were begging the president — pleading with him to send this aid. It’s only really since the invasion that we’ve really started what we need to do to supply them.”
