Kim attended Appalachian State University as a National Merit Scholar, where Kim earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and political science. Kim has two children and two grandsons. Kim is a member of Christ Alive Church in Newton, where Kim continues to worship and serve.

Kim began a career in law enforcement with the Hickory Police Department, eventually becoming the agency's first female police sergeant. Following this, Kim served as a magistrate judge for eighteen years, handling various criminal and civil court matters. In 2014, Kim was elected as the Clerk of Superior Court for Catawba County, a role Kim has held since, with a focus on modernizing office operations and enhancing public service.
