A resident of Statesville, Jim Mixson is an honor graduate of Mitchell Community College (1988) and earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (1990). He has been married to his wife, Kristi, for over 22 years, and they have two children. Mixson is heavily involved in the community, serving as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 609 and holding leadership roles at Western Avenue Baptist Church and the Statesville Rotary Club.

Mixson’s professional career is rooted in law enforcement and public safety, spanning over 17 years as a North Carolina Probation/Parole officer. During this time, he specialized in sex offender control and played a key role in developing the N.C. Community Corrections current case planning model. Additionally, he has conducted professional training in motivational interviewing and the Justice Re-investment Act. Prior to his law enforcement service, Mixson held management positions with Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated.

Mixson has served as the Iredell County Clerk of Superior Court since 2012, having been sworn in by Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Joseph N. Crosswhite. Throughout his tenure, he has focused on the administration of the local court system and has been involved in observing the swearing-in of various county magistrates. 

The Clerk of Superior Court is elected in each county through a partisan election for a four-year term. The Clerk has five main responsibilities:
- Probate Judge: Handles 46 types of actions, including managing estates, guardianship proceedings, and appointing personal representatives.
- Court Administrator: Oversees the administration of the court.
- Record Keeper: Files, processes, and maintains all cases and documents submitted to the court.
- Financial Manager: Manages the collection, investment, and distribution of money from court fees and traffic citations.
- Employee Manager: Supervises a team ranging from 5 to over 200 employees.
