Gene is an attorney in private practice. He previously served as a felony prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney's Office. Before that, he was the chief clerk for the House Higher Education Committee for the Texas Legislature. 

Gene is currently a member of the Texas House of Representatives, representing District 137. He was first elected in 2012 and is currently serving his seventh term.
